NovaSure Endometrial Ablation

Heavy periods can be a real problem for many women.  Excessive bleeding, painful cramping, and the negative effects this can have on your lifestyle can make heavy periods a substantial problem.

Even so, many women wish to avoid more invasive therapies such as hysterectomy and hormone therapy.  A less invasive, less risky approach, with less pain and a faster recovery, is a procedure called “endometrial ablation.” Dr Cuellar is pleased to offer this procedure, using the NovaSure system.

If you are a premenopausal woman and have completed childbearing, NovaSure Endometrial Ablation may be the right procedure to end heavy bleeding.  The NovaSure Endometrial Ablation procedure is fast, safe, simple, and requires only one treatment for results.  Designed to be minimally invasive, the NovaSure procedure controls heavy bleeding by using radiofrequency energy to remove the endometrium, the glandular tissue lining of the uterus. Doing this takes about 90 seconds, needs to be performed only once, and results in greatly lightened periods or cessation of your periods altogether.  The procedure requires no pretreatment drugs and can be performed on an outpatient basis, or in our office.  Without the side effects of hormones or the invasiveness of surgical hysterectomy, you will recover more quickly, experience less pain afterward, and can return to your daily activities, usually within 48 hours.

Endometrial Ablation is minimally invasive, and treats heavy periods without resorting to major surgery. The satisfaction rate is over 90%, with approximately one third of patients experiencing no periods afterwards, while the rest experience greatly reduced bleeding and cramping.

The NovaSure technique for endometrial ablation is safe, simple, and effective.  The procedure uses radio frequency (RF) energy within the lining (endometrium) of the uterus, removing it.  The endometrium of the uterus no longer re-generates to an excessive level, so menstrual bleeding is typically much less.

Specifically, the procedure follows these steps:

Dr Cuellar will insert a slender wand through the cervix and into your uterus. Using the wand, RF energy is delivered to the uterine lining, for approximately 90 seconds.  Following this, the wand is gently removed.  This completes the procedure and nothing is left within the uterus.Once this is completed, the procedure does not need to be repeated.

Most women are highly satisfied with the results of the NovaSure endometrial ablation procedure.  Dr Cuellar welcomes the opportunity to discuss this or any other treatments for heavy or irregular bleeding.
